Broken Sewer Line? What Actually Happens During a Replacement
A single slow drain is usually a local clog. But when several fixtures act up at once — and especially when the lowest drains in the house are the worst — the problem is often the main sewer line itself. Catching it early is the difference between a straightforward fix and a messy backup.
Warning signs of a failing sewer line
- Multiple drains running slow throughout the home at the same time.
- Gurgling sounds from toilets or drains.
- A persistent sewage or foul odor inside or out in the yard.
- Soggy, sunken, or unusually green patches over the sewer path.
- Recurring backups that keep coming back after being cleared.
Why sewer lines fail here
In older South Florida properties it's often aging clay or cast-iron pipe that has cracked, corroded, or shifted over time. Tree roots are a frequent culprit too — they work into small cracks and joints looking for moisture and gradually choke the line. Ground movement and past construction damage round out the list.
What happens during a replacement
Replacement sounds intimidating, but the process is orderly and predictable:
- Camera inspection — we run a sewer camera through the line to see the damage and locate it precisely, so we know exactly what we're dealing with before anyone digs.
- Locate, mark & excavate — after marking utilities, we excavate the affected section, planning the access route to limit disruption.
- Install new pipe — the damaged run is replaced with durable new PVC sewer pipe, properly sloped and tested.
- Restore the site — the area is backfilled, compacted, and cleaned up.
Repair or replace?
Not every sewer problem needs a full replacement — sometimes a targeted repair or a clearing does the job. That's exactly why the camera inspection comes first: it tells us whether you're looking at a small fix or a section that's beyond saving. Either way, you'll know what's going on and what it will take before any work begins. Learn more on our Excavation Sewer Replacement page.
